History of
Harvest Christian Fellowship
Birth date: May 22nd 1993
Harvest Christian Fellowship of Bristol was founded by Dr. Larry K.
Nelson from Kingsport, Tennessee. The Church began it's meetings on
Thrusday nights and Sunday afternoons in the Bristol YWCA. On January
1st, 1994, Pastor Jon Darnell and Pastor Lynn Mason assumed the
leadership of Harvest with Rev. Duane Williams as the Praise and
Worship Leader.
On April 25th, 1994, Pastors Jon and Lynn were married and became
Pastors Darnell.
Services were changed to Wednesday night in the home of Pastors
Darnell on Randolph St. in Bristol, VA. and Sunday mornings in the
YWCA. In Sept 1995, the church moved to a leased building at 124 Keith
Rd. Harvest was very active in missions both in Bristol and overseas.
Monthly tithes were given into Agape Global Missions in Kingsport, TN. In
March of 2002, Harvest moved to 540 Hwy 126 Bristol, TN in a leased
building.
This was a one year lease with the intent to purchase at the expiration of
the lease.
In 2003 the building was purchased for $150,000 through First Bank and
Trust Co. The loan was structured for one year as an interest only to be
reworked at the end of that year for a five year period. The interest rate
was 7% for the first year and 6% for the remaining. Pastors Darnell and
Mr & Mrs McNew put up property for collateral. The church had nothing
to put down on the loan when the agreement was first made. However,
by closing time there was $5000.00 to put down. Projects for raising the
funds varied... yard sales, lunches sold, special services, and etc. Even
when attendance fell off, the bills always were paid, miraculously. extra
funds were even made to the principal.
In April 2008, the church was refinanced for a total of 15 years at 6.25%
interest with the Eastman Credit Union. Due the fact that the property
now was apprasied at $198,000 there was no need for collateral.
The church's purpose is that it is a training center to help others find
their purpose in God's service, and to help them achieve that purpose.
In 1999, God spoke a mission of praying over the city. In April the people
of the church started praying over the city on the first Saturday of the
month in downtown Bristol across from the train station.
Many efforts have been made by the church leadership to form
relationships with other Pastors in the area. For several years dinners
were held once a month for area Pastors to come and fellowship with
each other. In the year 2000, the praise team was sent out to start a
church in Greenville, TN.
This led to the birth of Victory Harbour with Steve Kinnard as Pastor.
Then in 2001, New Covenant Church in Abingdon was birthed with
Pastors Bob and Fran Maiden. Victory Harbour later became
independent with their own charter and continued a relationship with
Harvest. New Covenant closed at a latter date.
Outreach ministry has been an ongoing service with many different
types.
In spring of 2007, the church began having concerts. At first this was a
fund rasier, then after prayer and meditation, it became the regular
outreach ministry of not only Harvest but other churches came along
side from time to time. On the second Saturday of seasonal months a
free concert and meal is ministered to the public at large. In the summer
months these are held at the Downtown Center in Bristol.
Pastors Darnell are members of both the Bristol Ministerial Association
and the Bristol Ministerial Alliance.
